Position Summary The Head of Legal Chile will report directly to the Senior Legal Counsel, Anglo American plc. He will be responsible for all legal support for Anglo American business in Chile.
He is responsible through a team of lawyers to execute and promptly and effectively the legal aspects of Anglo American’s business operations and transactions, and to assist operations in achieving their business goals.
The main contribution of this position is to help Anglo American to define and execute a strategy to effectively identify, measure and manage all risks that may affect the business.
Main Responsibilities - Work closely and independently with the executive committee and operations teams to help resolve legal issues and minimize risk.
Establish and manage stakeholder / key client relationship with Copper executive Business Unit and, in particular, the Copper Executive Committee.
Think and act strategically. - Define the long term legal strategy. - Deal with Anglo American legal aspects of the business, advising any other area of the organization that may require legal counselling.
Providing advice and counseling on all legal issues affecting the business, including employment law issues and regulatory matters.
and - Adequately and timely comply with all reporting obligations (both internally and externally) strictly in accordance with Anglo Legal policies and guidelines.
What you ll need to know - Bachelor’s degree in Law - Experience in interfacing with key stakeholders (government and regulatory bodies) - Experience in working in a mining company - Experience in managing a team of lawyers - Experience in providing in-house advice (as opposed to third party counsel) - Broad understanding of Chilean law, with mining industry experience and knowledge of mining law useful but not essential - Fluent in English, both written and spoken, including legal language.
Competencies Risk Management In order to solve and avoid any problem that could appear in the short-term product of operations, finance, regulatory, normative, politic, social, public, security, in an environment where there are multiple factors that move fast and affects different aspects of the company, the Head of Legal Chile should : - Organize regular meetings with every area to be aware of their concerns and to advice them.
Planning and Analysis In order to have a consistent legal strategy in the long term, in an environment where every unit has their own agenda and problems so it is difficult to align them, the Head of Legal Chile must : - Meet with senior executives and the board to discuss how they want to take the company in legal terms.
Influence In order to push changes to update the company in regulatory and legal terms and to put the company in the best possible position to meet its development, in a world where individuals are resistant to change, he shall : - Convince the top executives and to the rest of the organization about the importance of this task, gaining their support and the needed resources.
